Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, located along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago, is a renowned haven for birders.
Known for its diverse habitats, including dunes, woodlands, and grasslands, the sanctuary attracts a wide array of bird species. During migration seasons, visitors can spot warblers, sparrows, thrushes, and shorebirds, along with occasional rarities. Year-round residents such as cardinals, woodpeckers, and chickadees make their home here, making Montrose Point a dynamic spot for birding enthusiasts.
We will meet at the entrance gate to the bird sanctuary, along Montrose Harbor Drive (41.9626, -87.6348). Metered street parking is along Montrose Harbor Drive; free park not far away within Lincoln Park is along Montrose Ave and also Simonds Dr.
Washington Park with the Locals
This park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, has a natural area of 35.7 acres of prairie and wetlands. Washington Park hosts many migrating songbirds and waterbirds.

Once known as the Skokie Marsh, this area was converted into a chain of lagoons and islands extending from Willow Road north to Dundee Road.
Each fall virtually all of the warblers that regularly move through the region are reported in the lagoons. It is also a haven for migrating cuckoos, flycatchers, vireos, thrushes and other species.
Difficulty: Moderate
Trip Type: Walk
Trip Distance: 2-3 miles
Terrain: Mixed terrain: paved, crushed gravel, dirt. In the dirt portion of the trip, along the water, individuals will have to walk on a dirt path and will need be going over fallen trees in some areas.

Set sail on this unique birding experience in Lake Michigan. This is an early start, departing from Montrose Harbor at 5:30 am.
By getting out into the lake this time of year we are hoping to turn up a jaeger or an interesting gull or tern. Pelagic birds are birds that spend most of their time over large bodies of water, often flying quickly and powerfully to catch prey and avoid predators. The leader of this trip will be chumming to increase your chances of bringing in a unique sighting.
So join this boat tour led by the experts at Red Hill Birding for your chance to see either a lot of gulls or maybe a lifer parasitic jaeger.
