Busse Woods, just a portion of the much larger Ned Brown Forest Preserve, is one of the last remaining fragments of flatwood habitat in country, as well as one of the most well-preserved upland forests in general, earning it a place on the National Parks Service’s list of national natural landmarks.

It is no surprise then that this rare and pristine habitat attracts a huge variety of birds – over 230 species have been recorded in the preserve and nearly 140 of them have been recorded in September. The woods are a popular stopover for many migrant warblers, flycatchers, and thrushes as well as a year-round home to many other woodland species including the locally uncommon Pileated Woodpecker.
