The Calumet Region encompasses a large area on Chicago’s South Side that has seen drastic landscape changes from wetlands to industry…and now back again as several marshes dot the area in various stages of restoration.

This area features wetlands, prairies, and woodlands, creating diverse habitats that support numerous bird species. The leader of this trip will help participants explore a couple of these marshes. Visitors can observe waterfowl like ducks and herons, with hopes of seeing other marsh birds such as rails and bitterns. Hegewisch Marsh is known for its rich avian diversity, attracting warblers, sparrows, and raptors. These marshes, and more, provide a critical refuge for both migratory and resident birds, making the area a great destination for nature enthusiasts.
